On This Day in 1956:
Now Comes the Edsel
One of the most publicized “secrets” in the auto industry became open and official knowledge this week. The Ford Motor Co.’s new medium-priced line, due next year, president Henry Ford II announced, will be called the “Edsel” in honor of his late father. The new tag actually was the first suggested for the new car, but the company sifted 18,000 others (samples: Mars, Jupiter, Apollo, Henry, Benson, Cavalier, and Drof- Ford spelled backward).

The Edsel sold poorly, and was immortalized with the “failure” tag.
