8/9/1945: NAGASAKI
The B-29 droned high over Japan, looking for its target. For 50 minutes, it poked through the thick clouds, until the crew began to worry about running out of gas. The orders were to bomb visually, not by instrument, but the fliers could see only the dull grayness of clouds and smoke. Unable to locate the the No. 1 objective [Kokura], the pilot asked a Navy ordinance expert beside him what to do. The observer suggested trying Nagasaki.
